About:
Google’s Bay View Campus is a sweeping, canopy‑roofed workplace on the eastern edge of Mountain View, California, overlooking the wetlands near the San Francisco Bay. The building was designed to maximise daylight, natural ventilation and flexible team spaces. Its dragon‑scale solar skin powers the site, while elevated paths and restored habitats weave technology, ecology and human movement into a spacious, landscape‑driven environment.
Inside Google’s workplace
Join us on our tour of Google’s Bay View, the first campus the tech giant has built from scratch in its 20-year history. Designed by Bjarke Ingels and Thomas Heatherwick, this stunning development sits on a 42-acre site boasting the largest geothermal installation in North America. You’ll see how this system heats and cools the buildings from below, while 40% of the campus’s energy comes from 50,000 overlapping solar roof tiles. In fact the roof, with its silver Dragonscale design, is one of Bay View’s showstopping features.
Inside, the central workspace is comprised of vast open-plan areas beneath the tented solar canopy. In response to staff feedback, social and collaborative zones are balanced with private space for quiet, focused work. The upper level, for instance, is divided into team neighbourhoods, each arranged around its own courtyard. Meanwhile the lower level provides opportunities for staff to gather and interact.
As you move through the buildings, you’ll see how the workspace is flooded with natural light from openings in the roof, promoting a sense of wellbeing and clarity. The campus is also surrounded by 17 acres of restored wetlands and meadows, giving staff direct access to nature. And it’s all fully electric and net-water-positive, with carbon-zero targets for 2030.
